Green Procurement Reporting For Departments and Agencies Not Bound by the Federal Sustainable Development Act

In 2011-12, SSHRC will ensure compliance with section 7 of the Policy on Green Procurement, including the development of targets. With this in mind, SSHRC has already made the following steps toward greening government operations:

  • implemented a program to reuse office supplies often left behind when offices
    are vacated;
  • integrated a recovery program for used batteries into SSHRC’s operations and adhered to the toner cartridge recycling program;
  • reduced paper consumption through online submission for some SSHRC funding opportunities, which has translated into a 52 per cent reduction in printing costs;
  • defaulted all office printing equipment to double-sided;
  • promoted the use of electronic tools or software such as Microsoft Outlook instead of paper agendas, planners and calendars; as well as the use of online versions of reference books such as dictionaries and writing, terminology and translation guides (e.g., Termium, ConjugArt);
  • selected SSHRC letterhead materials with vegetable-based inks, recycled fibres, and environmentally friendly varnishes, and adhered to Eco Mark program standards; and
  • disposed of assets in an environmentally friendly manner, and promoted reuse through initiatives such as providing used computers to schools and using the Crown asset-disposal auction site.
