In 2010, 12 organizations undertook a strategic review, covering about $35 billion in program spending to identify potential savings. In addition, National Defence used the strategic review process to identify the savings required to meet the cuts in defence spending announced in Budget 2010.
Savings of $1.6 billion were directed to Budget 2011 priorities including balancing the budget.
Since 2007, four rounds of strategic reviews have taken place. In total, $2.8 billion in annual ongoing savings has been identified.
