This chart illustrates SWC’s Program Activity Architecture. It consists of four columns:

• The first column is headed by a dark–gold block labelled “Strategic Outcome,” under which is a single blue–shaded box containing the text “1. Equality for women and their full participation in the economic, social and democratic life of Canada.”
   
• The second column is headed by a dark–gold block labelled “Expected Results,” under which is a series of four lighter blue–shaded boxes. The first three boxes describe expected results of SWC’s program activities, specifically, “Increased policy effectiveness in addressing women’s issues and gender equality,” “Sustainable capacity of federal government departments to apply GBA [gender–based analysis],” and “Increased integration of women’s issues in the formulation of policies and programs.” A horizontal arrow points from each of these boxes back to the blue–shaded box in the first column.

  Below the first three boxes is a single half–width box that reads “Increased participation of women in their communities.” A horizontal arrow also points from this box back to the single vertical box in the first column. To the right of this half–width box are other half–width boxes, one atop the other. The top box of the two reads “Increased awareness among women in identifying and/or removing barriers to their participation in their communities.” The bottom box of the two reads “Increased partnerships with other federal departments, levels of government, NGOs and the private sector.” A vertical arrow points from this lower box to the upper box, and these two boxes are grouped by a large brace symbol that points towards the first half–width box.
   

• The third column, which is headed by a dark–gold block labelled “Program Activities,” shows two dark blue–grey circles positioned vertically one above the other. The text in each circle describes an SWC program activity. The upper circle reads “PA 1.1 Strategic policy analysis, planning and development;” the lower one reads “PA 1.2 Women’s participation in Canadian society.” A double–headed vertical arrow connects the two circles. Three single–headed horizontal arrows from the upper circle point back to the upper three vertical boxes in the second column, and two single–headed horizontal arrows from the lower circle point back to the pair of half–width boxes in the second column.
   
• At the very bottom of the chart, underlying the second column and extending a little way into this third column is a long pale blue–grey box labelled “PA 1.3 Internal Services.”
   
• The fourth column is headed by a dark–gold block labelled “Program Sub–Activities.” In the lower half of this column, two horizontal boxes in paler blue–grey are set vertically one above the other at the level of the second circle in column three. These boxes, whose borders are dashed instead of solid like the other shapes in the figure, describe the sub–activities of PA 1.2. Specifically, the upper box reads “SA 1.2.1 Supporting women’s empowerment,” and the lower box reads “SA 1.2.2 Building strategic partnerships.” A double–headed vertical arrow connects the two boxes, and a single–headed horizontal arrow from each box points back toward the lower circle in the third column.
