This pie chart shows the distribution of SSHRC grants and awards, by research area. SSHRC’s total grants and awards investments for the fiscal year 2009-10 are $334.8 million, excluding the Indirect Costs Program.

The chart presents a specific set of five research areas falling within Government of Canada science and technology priority research areas. These represent $96.9 million, or 29 per cent of SSHRC’s total grants and awards investments.

The five science and technology priority research areas are as follows, and are presented showing SSHRC’s investment in each area, in millions of dollars and as a percentage of SSHRC’s total grants and awards expenditures:

• Environmental science and technologies: $21.4 million, 6%
• Natural resources and energy: $4.0 million, 1%
• Health and related life sciences and technologies: $25.3 million, 8%
• Information and communications technologies: $22.7 million, 7%
• Management, business and finance: $23.5 million: 7%

The remaining research areas and SSHRC’s investment in each area, in millions of dollars and as a percentage of SSHRC’s total grants and awards expenditures, are as follows:

• Arts and culture: $49.9 million, 15%
• Economy, employment and markets: $29.0 million, 9%
• Education and learning: $27.2 million, 8%
• Human development: $20.9 million, 6%
• Social development: $61.6 million, 19%
• Governance of society and institutions: $34.7 million, 10%
• Other areas: $14.6 million, 4%
