Description of Figure: Defence Planning and Performance Reporting Framework

This diagram illustrates the alignment of Defence's Program Activity Architecture, Risks, and Priorities to the Canada First Defence Strategy. It consists of three columns.

The middle column of the graphic has the heading "Alignment to the Canada First Defence Strategy, Program Activities, and Defence Priorities 2009-10".

Below is a layered structure incorporating the Canada First Defence Strategy (blue), Program Activities (light-grey) and Defence Priorities (dark-grey). At the top is a blue triangle representing the roof, with the words "3 Roles: Canada, North America, Abroad". Next are a light-grey Program Activity rectangle with the words "Program Activity: Generate and Sustain Relevant, Responsive and Effective Combat-Capable Integrated Forces" and a dark-grey Priority rectangle with the words "Defence Priority: Build the Defence Team", which are both atop a blue horizontal rectangle with the words "6 Core Missions".

Below these are another "Program Activity: Conduct Operations", followed by two more Defence Priorities: "Achieve Operational and Mission Success in Afghanistan" and "Support the 2010 Winter Olympics". Below these, and in the centre of the graphic, are four blue vertical pillars with labels "Personnel", "Equipment", "Readiness", and "Infrastructure", respectively.

Next are the Program Activity, "Contribute to Canadian Government, Society and the International Community in Accordance with Canadian Interests and Values" and the Defence Priority, "Align Defence Activities with Key Government Priorities". Below these are still another Program Activity, "Internal Services" and the Defence Priority, "Build Excellence in Defence Management". At the bottom of the graphic is a blue horizontal rectangle with the words "A Modern, First-Class Military for the 21st Century".

The left column of the graphic has the heading "Defence Strategic Outcomes". In the column are four arrows with text, representing Defence's four Strategic Outcomes. Each is aligned to its Program Activity in the following manner:

Canadians' confidence that Defence and the CF have relevant and credible capacity to meet defence
and security commitments - Generate and Sustain Relevant, Responsive and Effective Combat -
Capable Integrated Forces

Success in assigned missions in contributing to domestic and international peace, security and stability - Conduct Operations

Good governance, Canadian identity and influence in the global community - Contribute to Canadian Government, Society and the International
Community in Accordance with Canadian Interests and Values

Internal Services - Internal Services

Finally, the right column of the graphic has the heading "Key Corporate Risks". In the column is a large arrow pointing at the centre structure. It lists three corporate risks: "Defence Team Capacity Issues", "Investment Plan Flexibility", and "Canadian Forces Reconstitution".
