Secondary Energy Use, Actual and Without Energy Efficiency Improvements, 1990 to 2005

Secondary energy use increased between 1990 and 2005. Without improvements in energy efficiency, increases attributable to activity, weather, structure and service level would have led to an increase in secondary energy use of 35.9 percent. However, as a result of a 13.6 percent improvement in energy efficiency, actual secondary energy use increased by 22.9 percent to 8543 petajoules.
